Hope deferred makes the heart sick
A simple study of this verse...
Pro 13:12
"Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but desire fulfilled is a tree of life."
John Wesley's Explanatory Notes:
Hope deferred - Delays in obtaining what a man passionately desires.
The desire - The good desired.
A tree of life - It is satisfactory, and reviving.
Matthew Henry Complete Commentary:
1. Nothing is more grievous than the disappointment of a raised expectation, though not in the thing itself by a denial, yet in the time of it by a delay: Hope deferred makes the heart sick and languishing, fretful and peevish; but hope quite dashed kills the heart, and the more high the expectation was raised the more cutting is the frustration of it.
It is therefore our wisdom not to promise ourselves any great matters from the creature, not to feed ourselves with any vain hopes from this world, lest we lay up matter for our own vexation; and what we do hope for let us prepare to be disappointed in, that, if it should prove so, it may prove the easier; and let us not be hasty.
2. Nothing is more grateful than to enjoy that, at last, which we have long wished and waited for: When the desire does come it puts men into a sort of paradise, a garden of pleasure, for it is a tree of life.
It will aggravate the eternal misery of the wicked that their hopes will be frustrated; and it will make the happiness of heaven the more welcome to the saints that it is what they have earnestly longed for as the crown of their hopes.
I know the basic meaning, but still don't totally understand this verse...
Or rather don't fully understand how it can apply to me for the better yet.
I need more revelation on this... :)

hey i read all the explanations i also dun quite understand. but my interpretation is live every day to the fullest as every new day we can make it a "hope deferred" day or or a "desired fulfilled" day. even like the bus came can be celebrated right. So sometimes the delay is like it adds more joy when finally our jigsaw puzzle is solved when many years/mths later we looked back, we are like OHHHH no wonder GOD allow that to happen. That's fun. God is full of surprise~ bttm

Once when in prayer, I heard the Lord speak to me by simply saying Doctor!
I did not understand that at the time, but soon after I became very ill.
Of course I went to a Doctor for help, and I assumed that this was a directive God had given me, to seek medical help.
The Doctors found nothing wrong, all tests were negative.
I was ill, and suffering, yet I could not find anything wrong with me.
One day God gave me this scripture,

I had been awaiting, and expecting a promise from the Lord, for many years.
It has not come.
I was in despair, I lost hope, my heart became sick.
I am the Doctor, God has revealed what is wrong with me.
I am no longer in despair, my hope still remains in Him (Jesus)who is the author and finisher of my faith.
I believe again, now I am well.
